A network proxy is a gateway that acts as an intermediary between a local network (such as all devices in a building or company) and the internet. It can provide an additional layer of security, privacy and performance enhancement when connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
To configure a proxy in Windows 10 you can either use the settings app, or manually modify your configuration. If you’re using the Settings app, choose Proxy under Network & Internet. You can skip this step in the event that the Use a Proxy Server switch is already disabled. If not, you’ll have to turn it on. Fill in the details for your proxy server and port.
You might be asked by an IT administrator to use the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol script (WPAD) for instance, if you’re using a proxy in a workplace or school environment. This method is more reliable than manual configuration.
You should also deactivate any third-party applications that could interfere with or alter your network settings. This includes firewall, antivirus and VPN programs. This is especially useful when the error message you’re receiving states that “Windows could not automatically detect the proxy settings of this network.”
If all else fails, you can attempt a reset of the system. This will delete any drivers and programs that have been installed since the restore point was created, allowing you to restore the default settings of your system. This should solve the issue which will allow you to connect to the internet once more without receiving the error message.
